Hello everyone.

It has happened to me several times to play on pianos with a rather uniform key weight (between 60 and 55 gr) and with good escapement regulation, but with a terrible key consistency, a sort of "empty", "springy" descent. In your opinion, considering these premises, what could be the causes of this problem?

I invite you to watch my tutorials on regulation. Then we can talk about it. It can depend on many factors. Not least the mechanical pins being too "loose," meaning too little friction... keyboard with worn gaskets... hammer rail very shaved.......

i would like to ask if it is possible to know what the resistance coefficient parameter is for the jack pins and for the hammer pins (if there is one).

Hello everyone.

I would like to ask you if when replacing the pins (in this case, hammer pins and repetition pins) it is mandatory, or strongly recommended, to increase the diameter of the pin. If yes, by how much is it usually increased?

Absolutely yes! By how much? Generally by one measurement: if you find 1.30, then go to 1.325. It is appropriate to insert and remove the pin only in the cashmere part to test its accuracy. Any boring of the gasketed holes must be performed with non-conical reamers. If the pin has been properly replaced, the fork should fall slowly and uniformly under the weight of its screw

Lightening can only occur by eliminating friction. Lightening too much means compromising the return weight of the keys. In any case, the regulation must be rechecked

The keyboard has been lightened by putting back the original lead weights that had been removed from inside the key. By doing so, the keyboard was over 60 grams (but I don't know by how much more, because my key weight scale reaches a maximum of 60g). By putting back the internal weights (and some external ones), we are now at a weight of 55-58 grams. I find it lighter but also less controllable.

When this happens, a vicious cycle begins. One would need to see the actual weight of the hammer, the friction, and the resulting weighting. A proper proportion must be reached between the downward weight and the return weight. One also needs to see where the keyboard is being balanced. The lack of controllability makes me think specifically of an incorrect return weight relative to the downward weight, for example.

Thank you Pianoexpert. what you are writing is very true. A vicious cycle is triggered, you improve one thing, and another gets worse....

Are there specific technical parameters regarding the downweight and let-off weight dictated by the manufacturer (kawai kg 2)? In the official manuals, the weight is not written. What could be a good compromise for a kawai kg 2 piano.....?

Hello, my Kawai kg 2D piano has these weights in the central part: let-off weight 58, repetition weight: with 42 almost everything returns to rest; with 45 it exceeds the first escapement. Is this normal or is it a large discrepancy?

regarding friction: when the roller rubs against the pusher, it causes a dull rubbing noise that I eliminated using 6B graphite, but after a couple of days the noise punctually returns. As soon as the graphite is applied, the keyboard feels smoother and more responsive. Do you think I am using the wrong type of graphite, the wrong procedure, or is it something else? The rollers are slightly worn, but it doesn't seem to me so evident as to require replacement.

Graphite is fine. The hammer felt is probably flattened and needs to be replaced. Generally, it is only replaced if the hammer rail is in good condition. Otherwise, it is common sense to replace with new hammers and shanks, taking care to observe the same weights and shapes as well as the exact striking points on the strings. This way you have the advantage of keeping the old hammer rail intact, which... is important... must not be thrown away!!!!

Hello everyone. Sorry for the trivial question: are there any gauges to measure a key depth of 10.5 mm? I have found ones for 9.5; 10; 11. The 10.5 mm one is missing.

I am asking this because in the Kawai regulation manuals, the key depth is regulated differently depending on the models; it goes from 10.3 to 10.5 and rarely to 11 mm. I was wondering how it is possible to calibrate exactly with fixed gauges without the specified measurement.

Hello everyone. I am resuming the conversation regarding keyboard action consistency by asking for advice on the weighting of the Kawai Kg2 (80s). I would like to restore the original factory weight, which I remember being quite heavy. The instrument has been lightened and modified several times, but it is not very satisfying, especially in the return weight. Does anyone among you know the original weighting? In the central part, I wouldn't go below 60g.

Hello,

To ensure optimal mechanical operation (assuming that it is well-regulated), the proportion ratio between the descent weight and the ascent weight of the key is expressed by the value 2.174, but, to satisfy the needs of modern schools, this ratio can also take a value of 1.9.

For your Kawai model, the let-off distance must be 10.5 mm.

The let-off weight is 55/57 grams and the return weight is 20/21 grams.
