Good evening

I own a 1875 Pleyel grand piano, 185 cm

The soundboard has been restored (ribbing), refinished (shellac). The metal parts of the harp have been puttied and repainted; the mechanical part is original and in perfect working order (ivory whitened, hammers shaved, kashmir mortise replaced....)

Total replacement of the strings, except for the bass strings which are still in perfect condition.

For a grand piano of this type, specific measurements exist, such as for the keyboard how deep it should be relative to a key at rest, what distance the hammers (at rest) must have from the strings, therefore values for bass, mid, and treble ranges.

Lastly, what distance must there be between the string and the hammer remaining depressed once the string has been struck?

And should it be considered a single escapement mechanism (English type) or a double escapement of an older type, in short, a progenitor of the latter (Erard type, to be clear)?

Congratulations to you for the Pleyel!!!!!!! If we think that Chopin died in 1849, your piano was born shortly after!!!!! Congratulations. It's a pity we are far apart, I would really love to see it in person. Anyway, from the photos, I see a beautiful instrument!!!!!

The geometry of the action is a bit altered by the shaving of the hammers... which I see as a bit too round on the highs.... but then again, by leaving the originals, one cannot expect to recover the more pointed shape. So "extenuating circumstances" for the skilled Technician who had the honor of touching the instrument.

Let's say that the hammer-string distance could be around 45 mm and the let-off of the whites about 10 mm... 8 for the blacks. Ordinary escapement at 12-15 mm

The hammers must "escape" from the string: In the bass, at a distance equal to the thickness of the string. In the mids and highs, about 1.5mm-2 mm. The drop of an additional 1.5. The spring must be lightly charged. The hammer must rise back up from the escapement clearly, but without jumping. I don't think I can recommend other values. Well-regulated, it should work well! I must say that it is indeed a refined, delicate instrument with an extremely sweet tone....

Unfortunately, the photos I posted are from before the restoration; the hammer rail had not yet been planed.

The restoration carried out so far is philological in nature, and I would like it to be the same for the mechanical regulation, which I am told is very precise if well regulated.

I hope you can help me interpret the values found so far, from very authoritative texts, but unfortunately in French.

I have added some ? where the concept is not clear to me

 

Here are the average regulation values and specific values for

 

Pleyel.

• let-off: 1 to 2 mm

• Relapse: 2 mm ??????????

• escapement: 15 mm (13 mm on Pleyel, approx. 22mm on Erard).?????

• Let-off/Escapement: 42 mm (. Pleyel at 47 millimeters, approx. 45mm for Erard)

 

1.2.7 Mechanical regulation

Regarding the Pleyel and the Erard repetition action, the rest, and checking "THE LET-OFF" hammer

depths are very different from standard settings (Steinway, etc.)

 

• Rest: 47 mm (Pleyel), 45 mm (Erard), 42 mm (standard)

hammer parameter: 13 mm (Pleyel), 22 mm (Erard), 15 mm (standard)

• LET-OFF: 1 ~ 2 mm (all) • Setting the escapement: the top part of the lever discharge system must be 1/10th millimeters ????????????

 

• Setting escapement: standard 15mm, 13mm on Pleyel, ??????????

 

In the attached file is the original text with photos of the action (pp. 41-42), the same one installed on my grand piano.

Very interesting document. It seems to me that I have been very close to the specifications indicated by the document. I repeat: in the presence of hammer shaving, some measurements must be altered and the springs must also be well adjusted. In short, one cannot give an indication from a distance.

La chasse is the hammer-string distance with the hammer in the resting position. Obviously, since there is no repetition lever for the bridge, the escapement upright must be adjusted as on a vertical plane. Attrap: hammer catch. Escappement: the distance at which the hammer must escape from the string. Chute: the fall after the escapement.

Rather than exact specification measurements, good functioning will depend on the sensitivity of the person adjusting the mechanics.

Updated photos of the restoration, unfortunately we are having a bit of difficulty re-establishing the exact distances of the pins (in wood photo 206), because they were completely out of whack due to incorrect adjustment made by God knows who and when........

Try taking a look at the photos at the beginning of the topic; those are all from before the restoration, even though in reality the mechanics have not been altered compared to then, except for the replacement of parts subject to wear, cashmere, hammer shaving, the green felt where the hammers rest, and a little other stuff, because everything is in good condition, and the instrument had already benefited from further restorations in past years

What could a different distance of the drivers entail?

Would it significantly change the normal functioning of the mechanics?

Sorry, actually I expressed myself poorly; I meant the "escapement button," the one that stops the movement of the carriage.

The button in question makes the escapement lever "escape": a small L-shaped lever, whose shorter part meets exactly the felted button. I don't understand what the distance is: the distance between one pillar and the next? Or do you mean the height of each pillar more or less screwed onto its screw?

If I understood correctly, the escapement button is screwed in and out depending on the escapement point. What matters is at what distance from the string the hammer escapes and not how much the button must be screwed in!

I hope I haven't said anything heretical

Hi Lorenzo, in effect I also believe that one is the consequence of the other, but consulting an 1800s manuscript regarding the specific mechanics of my Pleyel model, the data provided spoke of a distance of 1/2mm from the wood in which it is screwed, hence my doubts about it; then, it's possible they were "rough" data..
