Is your piano out of tune?

Play a few notes and find out in thirty seconds how far your piano has dropped, and whether it is worth calling the tuner now or you can wait.

How it works

  1. Rest your phone on the piano, near the case.
  2. Play at least six different notes in the middle range highlighted below, one at a time, holding each for a couple of seconds.
  3. We tell you how it stands.
PLAY IN HERE

The middle range only: towards both ends every piano is deliberately “stretched” by the tuner, and measuring there would raise a false alarm even on a perfect instrument.

The audio stays on your device: the analysis runs in your browser, and nothing is uploaded or stored.

Play one note at a time and let it ring. Leave a moment of silence between notes.

What it measures, and what it does not

This tool does not replace a piano tuner. It measures how far the piano has drifted from the reference pitch and how well the notes agree with each other: it is there to tell you whether — and how urgently — to call a technician.

Real tuning is a different matter: it requires measuring the inharmonicity of each string, stretching the octaves accordingly, and setting the unisons — the two or three strings of every note — by ear and by hand at the instrument. No phone microphone reaches that far.

Unsure about the result, or does your piano have other problems as well — a key that will not come back up, a metallic sound, a squeaking pedal? Ask in the forum: there are tuners and restorers who answer.
