Hello everyone, while waiting for the issue regarding the inability to open topics in "PresentatI" to be resolved, I would like to submit to you the last (only?) piece composed by me.

My situation: I am 23 years old, the only instruction I have received was piano during middle school (so basic level). The only libraries I have available are the integrated VSTs of Cubase 5.

Despite this shameful situation, in this recent period, I wanted to try my hand at something different (until today I have always occasionally done "just because" electronic music without ever wanting to achieve a goal). I wanted to make a fresh start and, inspired by the greatest modern composers such as Hans Zimmer, I am looking for a personal journey in which I need to prove to myself (so nothing selfish but with all humility) that I can do something in this life that so far has only filled me with difficulties and disappointments.

Enough nonsense, the name Hans Zimmer was intentional.. I feel particularly attracted to film soundtracks, trailer scores, so the fresh start is oriented in that direction. Hoping I haven't produced a half-baked piece of junk, I leave you the link to the composition.

I look forward to your critiques.

Thank you

I find that you have a lot of talent!

the piece is very beautiful at times but not always, there are also quite a few things that aren't working, in my opinion.

there is certainly a base of naivety and unrefined taste (among other things zimmer is the most tacky among his colleagues ahah) but there is great room for improvement. I would advise you not to waste it and, if you have the possibility, to study with a teacher.

I thank you infinitely! I fully agree that there are many things that aren't going quite right.. starting from the arrangement itself up to the final mix.. in other words.. even though I know exactly at which point the sounds don't sound good, I still wouldn't know what to do to fix it.. however, if you compare it with the previous one I did last month (Fight), you'll agree that I have already taken a step forward.. and that is exactly what I am aiming for.. I realized that in my situation I can only rely on experience to improve piece by piece.. unfortunately I cannot afford a teacher.. otherwise I would have already done so

As for the rest, thanks again for the compliments! It really makes me happy to read your opinion

I agree with AleGozzo, you have taste and the notes are moved by a clear listening path... so instinct is there too. Clearly everything can always be improved/perfected and there are points where sometimes one just gets by... but it flows.

I don't know, it doesn't quite "convince" me, let me explain: we are talking about a short piece with a well (this is indisputable) defined direction, but even though the elements used are coherent with each other overall, (pay attention to what I am about to say, which is not a personal criticism thrown out of nowhere just to say something) it seems to me (again, we are talking about personal opinion, so I am primarily refuted by the first comments, but it doesn't mean everyone will agree) that it is a bit exaggerated to define this type of work as the result of no small talent.

We are always talking about tastes, which are a personal prerogative, and can find favor or not, but for works of this type (at least as far as I am concerned, and the way I see things), I expect something that doesn't remind me of American trailers, because it is one thing to take them as inspiration, and another is to propose something that does not deviate from these examples.

It is logical that when a person expresses an opinion of this type, it is mainly because they foresee the possibility of moving differently in a similar context, and it is equally logical that this is not possible because everyone sees things differently, even if slightly; however, I do not feel like joining the other comments, and by saying this, I want to draw attention to the fact that there are no details that suggest something truly personal, but rather they refer to "memories" of something that has already been heard.

Here we are talking about music that is mostly electronic, and the possibilities offered (setting aside random modes, loops, samplings of others, etc.) are manifold; for this reason, I feel I can say something more compared to so-called instrumental compositions, or those that anyway presuppose a finer composing ability.

With this, I do not mean to say that the piece is not pleasant, I do not deny this, but I would like to be able to listen to (I would like is a sort of wish, it is obvious that what I want is not what another person wants, I am not saying it as if it were an obligation) something that has even just one sound, even if present in a non-constant way, but something unexpected and unique.

Sorry for the delay in responding Piccinesco. I hadn't logged into the forum for a while. Summarizing your concept, it seems to me that you don't see the talent highlighted by others, but rather you feel something "deja vu" in the whole that very much recalls American trailers. Even so, you are saying that the piece itself is listenable.

Well, following the trail of these observations of yours and what you pointed out regarding my last piece (Someone who believe in you), the current track I am working on is a complete reversal of everything I have done so far, in which I am incorporating what you all suggested to me! hoping therefore not to disappoint your expectations!

In the meantime, thank you Piccinesco, your post has given me a lot to think about.

Look, first of all, you "don't have to" disappoint yourself; the rest of us, myself included (as I very often have opinions that aren't exactly great), have expressed our views. For my part, I am willing to be

also harsh if (speaking always of personal impressions) I don't see anything that makes me think "I hadn't thought of that," or "this sequence, even if brief, is interesting," always relative to the context we are discussing.

Start from the assumption that if that was your intention, then fine; you shouldn't let yourself be influenced by the opinions of others. After all, we aren't talking about composition contests where one must prove they can write in certain styles, or at least know how to manage compositional techniques, even while taking risks. My being doubtful and proceeding with caution when I find myself listening to a certain type of music is determined by the fact that I have listened to a lot of it, and this is one of those genres that is very affected

by the "listened_to_reproposed" factor, precisely because one starts (naturally) from examples proposed by films, videos, trailers, etc. Today there are many channels to distribute the music one makes, but precisely because there are millions of them, the difficult part (besides getting heard, which most of the time happens by chance) is doing something that differentiates itself a bit from that sensation one sometimes feels when listening to tracks on the internet.

I should clarify that I am modifying the text because when I send it, it breaks my sentences up in a disjointed way.

Because there is no need for you to start a new line; it does it automatically. You should only use the enter key when you want to separate paragraphs.

I agree with Alegozzo; you are 23 years old, and if you haven't received an adequate musical education, I think that if you had been mentored, you could do much more. Perhaps Piccinesco did not consider these variables as well. Indeed, if I had studied composition, perhaps I would also have taken the same stance as the points raised by Piccinesco.

Regarding the mix, certainly the sounds are what they are; the final products you hear on CDs are recordings of real instruments; only in some cases are synths and samples used, namely when there is no possibility to waste time making new recordings, or when it is the composer themselves requesting sound design via synthesizers because instruments with that particular voice being sought after do not exist.

Furthermore, you cannot do everything. Even in the best recording studios, the composer thinks about composing the music, the musicians about studying and playing it to make the recording, the recording studio handles the editing of the tracks and the mix, and finally, the mastering studio produces the final master for commercialization on CD or Web.

This whole chain requires thousands of euros worth of equipment; therefore, if I were you, I would be satisfied with what you have managed to achieve with your tools, which doesn't seem at all bad to me... Improvable, but not bad!

I understand perfectly what you are saying, TheSimon. The only instruction I received was the position of the notes on the keyboard, on the staff, and the basics of keys in middle school. I continued privately with one year of piano at age 14, but at that time my affinity for music was below zero... and it is something I bitterly regret.

At the current state, unfortunately, I have no possibility of taking courses or being followed by someone more competent; I see no other choice but to continue relentlessly on my path..
