I have just finished watching a wonderful film: "Quartet", directed by Dustin Hoffman, on Sky. If possible, do not miss it. They will show it again tomorrow around 1:30 PM. But, watch out, keep a box of tissues close at hand. I just cried a barrel of tears over it. Ah, the quartet in the title is that from Rigoletto, and it takes place in a nursing home for elderly musicians.

I managed to download the film from the Internet, even in excellent quality, and I watched it last night.

What can I say? The setting was excellent, the scenography perfect (both the exteriors and the furnishings of the rooms and halls were very beautiful). Good, but I wouldn't say it was truly moving to the point of tears. Of course, there is a reflection on old age and the different ways in which human beings face it. However, it doesn't seem like a masterpiece to me; Hoffman has certainly done infinitely better things in his long career as an actor.

Aside from the "blurred" ending (in the end, the story breaks off just at the most interesting part, and the famous quartet is only heard from afar), I didn't like the joke about the alleged advantages of quitting smoking, a joke shamelessly copied from Woody Allen.

"Quartet" is a tribute to the people of Hoffman who gave their lives for classical music, its development and promotion. This is a great, good film.
