advice on audio interface

in the worst case scenario, if I were forced to buy another one, would you recommend any models?

keep in mind that I don't do high-level home recording, nor would I be capable of it or interested in doing so.

i use it for simple home recordings, at most to record rehearsals with my jazz quartet,

and for the ensemble of instruments that I had my students at school build. I don't know much about it, but it seems
to me that I have listed 3 different situations. therefore, I believe I need an interface with a good number of inputs.

otherwise, I really wouldn't know where to start!

How do you record your Jazz quartet? What is the recording set?

In the absence of drivers, I would try to resolve it by making a double partition: one with Snow Leopard and one with Lion/Mountain Lion, and I would use the Hercules under 10.6.8, or obviously change the card.

As for me, as long as everything works, I'm staying with Snow.

If it's new, I wouldn't go for a FW: little by little it is going out of use.

If you need more, the price goes up quite a bit.

at home for studying, to understand what things we do well, what less well, the sound, the improvisations....4 microphones placed in a cross

Same here! I tried Lion right when it came out and it gave me a lot of compatibility problems, many even with Logic, and I went back immediately. It is also true that it had just come out, but as Zedef says, as long as everything works for me, I'm staying with Snow Leopard too.

Rather than the H2, an H4n is better since you can use 2 external microphones + the 2 from the zoom.

However, it is almost impossible to work in multitrack unless you record one instrument at a time.

And anyway, an H4n costs 250-300 euros; at this point, an 8-channel interface is better.

I also stick with Snow for home recording. Pro Tools crashes on me constantly and I have no intention of following Mode.

If there were a version for Windows, I would go with 7. On the same machine, it runs much faster

Logic no because it is Apple proprietary but Protools is also available for windows 7 !
