All European cinema must be digitized
According to a report by the European Commission, one million hours of European films are lying idle. By converting them to digital, they would be made easily available. Obstacles: scarce funding and rights management.

It seems like an excellent idea to me, also from the perspective of sharing historical material, films/documentaries, etc.
