Hello. I would like to know your opinion on a piano that was given to me as a gift.
It is an ERNST KAPS DRESDEN (Panzer System) with crossed strings. Serial number 16900, so late 1800s. Completely restored, both externally and internally. The instrument is like new and the sound is crazy. Very warm.
Since I already have two pianos and my tuner, as soon as he saw and tried it, made me a great purchase offer (which for now I won't mention so as not to influence you), I would like to know the value of this fantastic upright piano, so as not to get ripped off.
If it is in excellent condition, it is an interesting matter.
The Kaps you possess, besides being an instrument of excellent brand and quality, has significant collector interest. The piano has a value of 3000/3500 euros with "base cabinet". If the cabinet is particularly ornate, even more. The important thing is that, being from the late 1800s, it must absolutely have a cross-stringing system - of modern conception, among the company's first - and not a bayonet system, and that it features the "Panzer Sistem" patent - a peculiarity of the company.

Hi. Are you the same "Alano" restorer known on musica-classica? I am Fabio Tozzi, we spoke about a year ago also regarding a Kaps.
I am trying to sell another one. Also cross-stringed and also Panzer System obviously, but it is from 1901. The price is around 2500 euros. Might you be interested?
Hi Fabio, I remember you well. It's been a while since I've returned to other shores because I had some dealings with you-know-who -then if you want contact me privately and I'll explain the reason better-
The price of your Kaps is reasonable, although obviously the instrument would need to be seen and tested. However, I am only interested in instruments from the 1800s, so for this reason, I'll pass. But if you happen to come across a late 1800s Kaps like the one above, please keep me in mind. I'll also give you my number.

hello everyone. i also own an ernst kaps from the second half of the nineteenth century. perfectly restored by a professional restorer. had several people give quotes... and yet the maximum offer I received is ā¬2000. how can that be? would you perhaps like to see the photos and give me your evaluation?

Hi Jonah Hex, the price depends on many factors. The quote they gave you is reasonable if the instrument has not been perfectly restored or if there are technical problems. Let me give you an example. If specifically an antique Kaps has tuning pins that do not hold the tuning well, there are two ways: either they are replaced or they are hammered. These two paths have completely different costs. So if in your Kaps, for example, they have already been hammered, it is clear that it will have a lower value compared to a Kaps with unhammered pins. And so on. This was just one example among many. Anyway, if you want to show me the instrument, I am interested.
