Some tuning pins of my piano no longer hold the tuning. Therefore, I should replace them...
how can I find out the diameter of those already mounted on my piano without disassembling them first? I have a Yamaha C3, are there standard measurements?
And then what size should I take to replace them? And above all, is there a website or an online shop where I can purchase only some of them, without having to buy them for the entire piano?
It is not easy to replace them, because the respective strings must also be changed. The pins must not be "partially" enlarged (this shouldn't happen because they must all be equal). Therefore, one must determine if it is a general problem. If it affects only some, the cause must be understood. One must ensure that there are no cracks in the soundboard. A good technician can proceed to disassemble some of them, if there are few, and shim the holes with a small piece of beech veneer and put the old pin back....but only if there is no failure of the soundboard!!!!!
Another possibility: Beat the affected pins, while protecting the lower part of the soundboard with an appropriate support. The pin finds a small still-good part at the bottom of the hole, increasing the grip. Always checking that there are no cracks and/or failures.
