Hello everyone,

i found a picture of an American upright piano with ankles mounted on the upper part of the soundboard.

i would like to ask; does this type of construction increase tuning stability?

Dear James, I really don't think so. I believe it is just a matter of convenience. It could also be more convenient to access the soundboard to replace it if necessary. I would say, in my opinion, that the part of the string going from the hitch pin to the capstan also moves with some difficulty. It would need to be checked, anyway. It seems to me that I can see, but it is not clearly understood, that the compression is also missing in the mids and highs.
