REGULATIONS
Art. 1
The National Arts Prize is an initiative desired by the MIUR to promote excellence within the system of Higher Artistic, Musical and Choreographic Education in Italy. In this context, the "G.F. Ghedini" Conservatory of Music in Cuneo has been entrusted with the task of organizing the Competition for the 2011/2012 edition, for the section "Original pop and rock music: groups, soloists and voices". Therefore, the Competition is dedicated to the following area of intervention: composition, arrangement, and performance of original sung and/or instrumental pieces.
The candidates and their works will be evaluated based on the following parameters:
• musical writing (and lyrics, where present);
• arrangement
• live performance.
Art. 2
Composers and musicians of any age and nationality are admitted to participate, provided they are regularly enrolled in Italian Conservatories of Music or regularly recognized equivalent Musical Institutes.
Students of the "G.F. Ghedini" Conservatory of Music in Cuneo may submit an application for participation.
Winners of the previous edition for the same section are excluded from participating in the Competition.
The compositions submitted to the competition must be the work of composer(s) who are students of a Conservatory of Music or an equivalent Musical Institute.
Even the lyrics, where present, should preferably be original, the work of an author who is a student of a Conservatory/Institute. However, the possibility is given to work with text from another and different source.
The musical groups in competition must be composed of students of a Conservatory or equivalent Musical Institute, but they may make use of the contribution of external musicians in the case of groups of a certain numerical size. The ratio between musicians belonging to the Conservatory/Institute and external musicians is as follows:
• soloist, duo, trio, quartet: all must necessarily be students of the Conservatory/Institute (no external members possible);
• quintet, sextet, septet, octet, nonet: maximum 1 external musician is possible, who is not a student of the Conservatory/Institute;
• from a decet onwards: maximum 2 external musicians, not students of the Conservatory/Institute.
There is no limit for Institutions wishing to participate regarding the number of candidates they may propose.
Art. 3
The Competition will take place on October 18 and 19, 2012, at the "G.F. Ghedini" Conservatory in Cuneo, via Roma 19, with the contestants' call scheduled for October 17 at the same venue at 6:00 PM. The final test will take place in the form of a public concert on October 19 at 9:00 PM at the Teatro Toselli.
The Competition is divided into three phases: preliminary, semi-final, and final.
Preliminary Phase. The first phase of the competition will take place "remotely," as it is the evaluation phase of the submitted works. No later than September 14, 2012, candidates must send the following materials to the "G.F. Ghedini" Conservatory in Cuneo, together with the registration application:
• n. 2 original pieces (score, lyrics where present);
• audio recording.
After the evaluation of the applications and the received materials, only 6 candidates/groups will be admitted to the semi-final and final phases.
Semi-final Phase. The semi-final phase is not intended as a step aimed at further selection and elimination of candidates, but as a phase for the identification and choice—following performances—of only one of the two pieces presented in the preliminary phase by the candidates, which will subsequently compete in the final test. Therefore, on October 18, 2012, the candidates admitted to the competition must perform, in the presence of the jury, both pieces submitted for the preliminary phase: at the end of the test, the jury will choose, for each finalist, the piece that must be presented at the final.
The rehearsals for the final performance will be monitored and evaluated by the Commission: in this context, the Commission may operate actively, introducing elements of analysis, comments, and suggestions addressed to the candidates.
Final Phase. Friday, October 19 at 9:00 PM, the candidates will undergo the final test during a public performance, open to the citizens, at the Teatro Toselli in Cuneo. At this venue, the Commission will identify the candidacy worthy of the prize.
Tie awards (ex-aequo) for the winner are not permitted.
Alongside the work of the Arts Prize, the Conservatory of Cuneo may organize seminars and masterclasses on popular music or on themes related to studio production and/or recording.
Art. 4
The jury, whose judgment is final, will be composed of experts in the field appointed by the Ministry.
Art. 5
The award ceremony for the winner will take place in Rome
within the framework of the Final Gala Evening organized by the
General Directorate for Higher Musical and Choreographic Artistic Education in the presence of ministerial and government authorities.
The "G.F. Ghedini" Conservatory of Cuneo will award the winner a Prize consisting of
participation in a concert to be held within the 2013 calendar year as part of the Conservatory's Artistic Season programming.
Art. 6
Applications, including all materials necessary to produce the candidacy, must reach the
secretariat of the "G.F. Ghedini" Conservatory of Cuneo, via Roma 19 – 12100 Cuneo by September 14, 2012. The postmark shall not be considered valid: applications and attachments must reach the
Secretariat of the Conservatory of Music of Cuneo by this date.
It is requested to write on the envelope, in addition to the recipient and sender details, also the wording: "Premio
Nazionale delle Arti 2011-12".
The following documents are required:
• participation form, completed in every field as requested;
• detailed curriculum vitae of the musicians and/or the group;
• copy in notation, also signed, of the presented pieces;
• copy of the sung text, where present;
• description of the presented pieces;
• release declaration for any possible performances, broadcasts, television or radio recordings made within the scope of the competition, by both the music authors and the lyric authors;
• recording on digital media of the two pieces presented to the competition.
Art. 7
The submitted material will remain entirely in the archive of the Conservatory of Music of Cuneo. The
return of such materials will be carried out only upon explicit request of the interested party and with postage costs borne by the recipient.
Awarded works will also be acquired by the Ministry for the establishment of a permanent collection as a testament to the quality of teaching and artistic production carried out by the Institutions
of the higher education and artistic and musical specialization system.
Art. 8
Travel and accommodation expenses of participants, as well as winners or nominees, are borne by their respective Institutions. The "G.F. Ghedini" Conservatory of Cuneo will provide assistance to
participants, with particular regard to the cost-effectiveness of accommodation expenses.
Art. 9
Rights relating to any dissemination of the documentary materials produced for the Premio Nazionale delle
Arti - as well as the winning works of the competition acquired by the Ministry - belong to MIUR, and
any use thereof will not involve the payment of any compensation.
