Beethoven Coriolan Overture

Mozart Requiem

I don't know why it was changed.... the Mahler Eighth was supposed to be there.

Despite the change... maybe Mahler cost too much? (even if they have money in Lucerne).

Anyway, not a great program: what does Coriolan have to do with Mozart's Requiem... bah...

The program was changed around mid-May, 3 weeks after the start of pre-sales for individual tickets. They went no further than saying that "Abbado decided on the change of program for artistic reasons", which certainly did not sit well with those who had just a few days earlier thrown themselves at the most anticipated event of the year.

At least they refunded those who wished to return their tickets to them. As for the concert itself, I found Beethoven exceptional, while for Mozart's Requiem it took a little while for everything to "come alive" a bit. Just as in the Salzburg recording, I find that Abbado reads it in a way that is too detached. I am not asking for Bernstein, but at least a minimum of "fire"...

Without a doubt, the initial program would have been something quite different; we shall see with next week's Bruckner...

I see Abbado performing a bit poorly with Mahler's Eighth, in Milan there were trees in the way... in Lucerne it was probably the algae surfacing from the lake waters...

Jokes aside, I believe the reason is surely the high costs! Perhaps by halving his fee
