Hi Guys, I am about to purchase another piano and I am torn between these two completely different models:
I should mention that I already have a Steinway A188
I wanted to get another instrument to keep in the tavern, both of them suit my style very well: Jazz
What do you recommend
Yamaha C7 from 1980, 88 keys, 3 pedals
Bechstein grand piano from 1879, 2.67 m, 88 keys, 2 pedals

I believe that a longer instrument is always to be preferred over a shorter one, given equal general conditions and wear.
But in this case we are comparing a recent piano with one from the late 1800s, the history of whose ownership is unknown.
Period pianos are beautiful, but they must be restored by competent people who do not watch the clock! Which is very unlikely today.

The Bechstein is dated, it has been repaired in an approximate manner, not by an artist....as usual, one only needs to look at the keyboard, misaligned, the wound bass strings done somewhat haphazardly....but maybe it is sound and plays very well, it would need to be seen....
The C7 is completely worn out, the action needs to be reviewed and the hammers definitely need to be redone...the rest, even there, would also need to be seen, one cannot evaluate from a single photo....
i believe that in both cases it will be necessary to spend some money

The beautiful thing is that both are available for 5000 euros each.

Yes, of course! They will be so full of surprises that they will start to be "usable" next year, after hard and long slogs...!
Forget about the coffins and invest in the Steinway, there you already have your work cut out for you.
Unless you want to fill your house with decorative pianos... That is a completely different sector!

you spend less than what they are worth, don't think you're getting a bargain.
1500/2000 euros of materials perhaps if you do the work yourself.
in any case watch out for the Bechstein's plate, it has been redone and already has visible defects....the tuning pins are old, you don't know how much tension was applied etc etc it might be a case of redoing everything...
the C7 with a new plate and hammer rail could become an excellent instrument, the spare parts must be Yamaha obviously.

Not to be prejudiced, but I believe that when you find brands/models like these at that price..... instead of thinking it's a great deal, you should smell something burning.
We might be clever, but one should never think that others are stupid and willing to give things away for free....
To be clear, if I had a piano of that type, and I knew that with 2000 euros it would become like new, would I give it away for 5000 according to you???? No, I would keep it for myself!
Listen to me, spend those 5000 euros on your Steinway and give it the dignified life it deserves.... it's better to have one excellent piano than to have 2 or 3 mediocre ones!

I agree with investing in the Steinway.
