Yesterday morning I started practicing some pieces to perform during the day and I noticed a strong tuning error on E3 and F3. The third strings of these two keys had dropped by almost 1/2 tone (the relative tuning pins are near the shortest part of the soundboard). I had to tune immediately. Everything else is ok, pf slightly flat.
Question: could it have been the RH that has dropped around 20% in recent days?
Undoubtedly these fluctuations in temperature and relative humidity only serve to negatively affect the tuning. It could also depend on the stability of the pedals. Then it must be said that some designs are very pushed, if that is indeed the case. That is to say, I mean that some brands, on certain upright and grand piano models, push the length-to-gauge calculation of the strings to the limit in order to increase sound power. This results in thicker strings becoming more inharmonic and less precisely tunable relative to their length. One notices this when, while tuning, it remains quite difficult to hold the strings steady, as they tend to go out of tune with the slightest movement. This causes a small movement of the pedal or a minimal movement of the board to correspond to considerable detuning. And this is very evident on unisons, especially in the mid, high, and super-high ranges. Of course, a half-tone detuning almost always corresponds to a significant movement of the pedal, which, perhaps, in this case, did not have good stability and/or had not been "set" properly.
......So it was a bit slow.... Stopping well means that the tuner must clearly feel under the key when the bridge rotates or twists. The bridge stops when it is no longer subject to the pressure and support movements of the key. The older the piano, the more appropriate it is to look for a "support point" for the bridge on the hole, so that it is more stable under the tension of the stressed string.
