An interpretation question: are the acciaccaturas in the first of Brahms' Ballades op. 10 on the beat or on the upbeat? In the editions I have consulted, the acciaccaturas are positioned after the barline: does this mean a rhythm on the beat? Thank you!

In my opinion, the acciaccaturas are on the beat; if they had been appoggiaturas, perhaps the matter would have been more ambiguous

Brahms - Michelangeli, Ballade Op.10 No. 1 in D minor

So on the upbeat, according to ABM ...

So it seems, I am not the most expert, but I think embellishment is part of the interpretation... I don't know what romantic performance practice prescribes, but I seem to remember in a manner like Rotore

I have never delved deeply into this piece, but it can be useful to compare Brahms's piano writing with his orchestral writing and the different interpretations...

Do you have any particular references in mind?
