BRIDGE SPRING TOO STIFF

Good morning everyone, I have a B.STEINER grand piano; I noticed a loud noise from the pusher upright button hitting the knuckle. If I am not mistaken, it should be a problem with the bridge spring being too tight; if that is the case, can you explain the technique to loosen the spring? Thank you in advance.

I can't quite understand the problem from your terminology. Which spoon? Perhaps the noise is due to the return of the pusher under the roller? Maybe the repetition lever spring needs to be loosened, or perhaps the level of the upright is too low compared to the level of the repetition lever... there is a proportion between the two!

I adjusted the upper part of the repetition lever spring; now the hammer rebounds with less snap. One thing I don't know about the spring is the lower part, meaning, does this also need to be adjusted? If so, how is it loosened or tightened? Thank you very much, Maestro.

That type of spring (Hertz-type spring) is loaded by pulling out the upper part, pushing it outwards gently. The lower part is used for unloading without pulling it out, but by stroking and pushing it gently with the appropriate small hook or L-shaped tool. As already mentioned in other posts, the hammer, when gently releasing the key and thus the hammer rest, must rise sharply and decisively, but without bouncing. Naturally, the friction of the fork pivot of the bushing affects the spring tension. This must not exceed approximately 5 g. If excessive, the spring requires more tension, which increases the hardness of the key, already altered by excessive friction. No lubrication or excessive spring tension when there is friction. IT IS ONLY NECESSARY TO CHANGE THE PINS (IMPROVING THEM AND REAMING THE FORK BUSHINGS WITH STRAIGHT RATHER THAN CONICAL REAMERS). Only in this way will the correct downward weight be restored, recovering an optimal return weight.

Conversely, pins that are too loose will cause the hammer heads to wobble and undergo stress at the moment of impact with the strings, increasingly ruining the tip and also putting more stress on the bushing holes of the forks.
