I am starting to prepare the catalogue of Telemann's compositions using various sources.
The Encyclopedia of Music (DEUMM) cites the calcedon among the instruments used by Telemann in the Church Cantatas.
Has anyone ever heard of this instrument and knows what it is?
I tried searching online but I couldn't find anything at all.

Never heard of it, I even took a look at Sachs but without success, I leafed through the plates, consulted the analytical index, etc.

I did a quick search online, it seems to be a synonym for mandola, i.e., a low lute used in the 1700s for basso continuo.

Since Calchedon sometimes appears in our inventory, I took a look on Wiki:

When all is said and done, I will adopt the term mandola.
The DEUMM, despite having a thousand merits, has the flaw that it tends, sometimes, to Italianize words in an approximate manner.
