The fact that he wrote for Parisian salons has absolutely nothing to do with it, seriously. One should know a little bit about the rhythms he used, about the musical language (especially of the mazurkas) to see how much Polish there was in his music and how much not. I have already suggested a book in another discussion, I suggest it again: Chopin seen through the eyes of his students, by Jean-Jacques Eigeldinger. Reading a book every now and then does good!

Aside from what Carlos rightly suggests, I remember that an important composer of the Polish national school was Szimanowsky, influenced specifically by Chopin.

I don't know how this fact can be inserted into the discussion, but there is probably a common experience between the two in musical language, meaning as a cultural, historical, and folkloric base.
