On this work I have always had some curiosities... I will try to ask my questions (perhaps useless ones):

Preludes, compared to what?

Eventually, why didn't he call them "Studies"... like the other series published by him?

Can one speak of a speculative work, like The Well-Tempered Clavier (24 preludes without fugues)? Effectively, even in this case, the keys are all different.

I would instead like to raise a curiosity regarding the Prelude of the droplet, where Chopin takes up a device used by Schubert in the sixteenth Lied of the cycle «Die schöne Müllerin». I don't know if you are familiar with this work by Schubert; I won't bore you with the story of the miller, but at a certain point his beloved prefers a hunter to him, and at a certain point the singing is full of melancholy and the piano supports it in a marvelous way. At the conclusion, the singing transforms into weeping while the piano insists on the same note....there is the "seed of the droplet"
