New York (New York, USA), Nov 6 (LaPresse/AP) - American composer Elliott Carter, winner of 2 Pulitzer prizes, has died in New York at the age of 103. The publisher Boosey & Hawkes, in announcing his death, described him as an "iconic American composer," but did not report the cause of death. In a 1992 interview with the Associated Press, Carter had described his works as "music that asks to be listened to with concentration and great attention." "It does not produce a theatrical effect, but the sounds create a new meaning in the listener." The way instruments interact in his compositions creates drama for the listeners, who make the effort to understand.
