CALL FOR SCORES

RISUONANZE 2013

The TKE cultural association is issuing a "Call for Scores" for pieces to be performed during the "Risuonanze 2013" festival; the festival is scheduled for early June 2013, in various locations in Friuli Venezia Giulia.

The Call for Scores is open to composers of all nationalities, without age limits.

The pieces must be written for solo piano, or for solo flute [C flute, and/or piccolo, and/or G flute, a single performer], or for solo voice [mezzosoprano, range: from F3 to F5 (piano) or Ab5 (forte)], or for solo oboe, and must never have been performed in public before the festival subject to this call.

Pieces of any style and aesthetic may participate, with a duration of 2 to 6 minutes.

A payment of 15 euros is required as a donation for expenses, payable via bank transfer or PayPal; each composer may submit a maximum of 3 pieces.

"Risuonanze" is an event based on direct interaction between composers and the audience; therefore, the composer's availability to attend the concert in person is highly appreciated and is considered a preferential selection condition, although not exclusive, during the selection of pieces. In such cases, no reimbursement is provided for the composer, who must independently arrange their own travel and accommodation.

The TKE cultural association may choose one or more pieces in each category, or even none if it deems it justified.

GUIDELINES

Deadline: March 1, 2013

Pieces written for:

solo piano

solo flute [C flute, and/or piccolo, and/or G flute]

solo voice [mezzosoprano, range: from F3 to F5 (piano) or Ab5 (forte)]
solo oboe

Regarding category c (solo voice), if the text is not in the public domain, it will be the composer's responsibility to obtain the necessary authorizations for its use;

Pieces with a duration of 2 to 6 minutes;

All submitted pieces must result, within the scope of the festival, in an "absolute first performance"; therefore, they must never have been publicly performed previously;

Participation must be carried out via email only;

Each email must contain:

the scores (one to three),

the receipt of the 15 Euro payment (PayPal: consult the Risuonanze website, or bank transfer: IBAN IT94P0634067684510300732297, BIC/SWIFT IBSPIT2U held by Associazione culturale TKE - specify in the reason for payment "Call for Scores Risuonanze 2013"),

a short biography (maximum 200 words);

The scores must be attached as PDF files;

The biography (in Italian, English, or French) must be written as text in the body of the email, along with name, surname, date of birth, and nationality;

The payment receipt (bank transfer or PayPal) must be attached as a PDF file;

In the body of the email, the phrase "I intend to attend the concert if my pieces are selected" or "I do not intend to attend the concert if my pieces are selected" must also appear;

Everything must be sent via email to the address callrisuonanze2013@gmail.com

The results will be announced by the end of April 2013 on the Risuonanze website; composers of the selected works will be notified via email.

of which this text constitutes the call for entries.

1. INTRODUCTION TO THE CALL

The Sincronie Cultural Association is pleased to announce the Second International SINCRONIE Music Composition and Production Competition. The competition is dedicated to Carlo Gesualdo of Venosa (1566-1613), a leading figure in the 16th-century Italian musical landscape, whose four hundred years since his death are to be celebrated by connecting his music and his dizzying harmonies with the techniques and thought typical of contemporary instrumental and electronic music.

Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa (Venosa, March 8, 1566 - Gesualdo, September 8, 1613), is one of the greatest composers of vocal polyphony of the late Italian Cinquecento. An ingenious and highly personal musician, at the opposite end of the style of Luca Marenzio and Claudio Monteverdi, he was a prolific composer of madrigals (six books for five voices) and sacred music (two books of sacrae cantiones and one of responsories). His teachers were Pomponio Nenna, Stefano Felis, Scipione Stella, and other excellent musicians of the era.

Inclined toward a revolutionary contrapuntal writing, strongly permeated by chromaticism and extreme harmonic daring, he exerted considerable influence on the composers of his time and, starting from the last century, inspired the creation of cinematographic works and musical dramas dedicated to him, as well as attracting the attention of many composers who studied his work, including Igor Stravinsky, who in 1960 created a Monumento pro Gesualdo di Venosa by elaborating three madrigals of the "Prince of musicians" for wind and string instruments. In addition to his artistic merits, Gesualdo is also remembered for the tragic and violent epilogue of his first marriage to Maria d'Avalos, caught in flagrante adultery and killed with her lover Fabrizio Carafa, on the night of February 21, 1594.

2. THE COMPETITION

GENERAL INFORMATION

The competition is open to members of the Sincronie Cultural Association, who are automatically enrolled upon paying the competition entry fee, without age or nationality limits.

The competition takes place in two categories:

Category A: re-elaboration for instruments with or without electronics;

Category B: re-elaboration for electronics only.

Contestants must freely re-elaborate one of the pieces indicated below without stylistic or aesthetic limitations. The chosen reference piece may be used in its entirety or only in part.

For both categories, the re-elaborations may not exceed a duration of 12 minutes.

Awards will be given to those who can use the provided materials to create a piece that, while maintaining a certain degree of recognizability of the source, succeeds in developing its musical suggestions beyond genres and styles.

Scores must be submitted via the internet in PDF format.

Possible electronic materials (only for category A) must be sent via the internet according to the methods indicated below. It will also be possible to use other methods subject to prior agreement with the competition secretariat.

CATEGORY A: re-elaboration for instruments with or without electronics.

Participants are asked to create a re-elaboration for instruments only, or for instruments and electronics, of a Gesualdian composition chosen from:

a) "Languisce al fin" (from the Fifth book);

b) "Tribolationem et dolorem" (from the Sacrae Cantiones);

c) "Ancide sol la morte" (from the Sixth book).

It is possible to obtain the scores of the three pieces by downloading a compressed file (zip) from the registration page.

The available instrumental ensemble is as follows:

one flute (including alto flute and bass flute), one clarinet (including bass clarinet), one violin, one viola, one cello, and an electronic keyboard.

The electronic keyboard may control a set of samples produced by the contestants themselves.

Participants may choose any possible combination of instruments, including with the addition of an electronic backing track designed for stereophonic reproduction. It will be possible to use an additional track with an eventual click for the conductor.

Live electronics, i.e., real-time electronic audio transformation of any kind, is not permitted.

CATEGORY B: re-elaboration for electronics only.

Participants are asked to create a re-elaboration for electronics only, also understood as a "remix," of the elaboration of the Gesualdian madrigal "Moro lasso al mio duolo" (from the Sixth book) performed by the Avanti Chamber Orchestra and listenable in mp3 format from the registration page.

It is possible to obtain the track to be re-elaborated in uncompressed format from an address that will be personally indicated to the contestant via email, once the fee for

registration.

The electronic rearrangement must be designed for stereophonic distribution.

3. HOW TO PARTICIPATE

1 - download the score PDFs in compressed format (zip) and listen to the reference track for Category B in mp3 from the registration page;

2 - register for the competition by paying the registration fee, which also includes membership to the Sincronie Association, in one of the following ways:

• making a bank transfer with the reason "tesseramento e concorso" (membership and competition) to:

• from the registration page paying with PayPal (with the addition of a small PayPal commission).

The basic registration fee is 35 Euro for both categories.

With this fee, it is possible to submit only one rearrangement.

It is possible to submit further rearrangements (up to three in total), also in a different category from the first rearrangement, by adding 20 Euro to the basic fee for each additional rearrangement.

3 - send an email to concorso (at) sincronie.org indicating:

• participant's first and last name;

• address;

• payment details;

• the chosen motto, if applicable (see below);

• any contact email (if different from the sender).

4 - Wait for the email with registration confirmation including (in the case of participation in Category B) the web address from which to download the track in WAV format, to be electronically rearranged.

5 -

Category A:

send an email to concorso (at) sincronie.org with the PDF file of the score or scores attached. The author's name must not be indicated on them, but rather a motto through which the rearrangement can be identified. If multiple scores are submitted, the motto must be different for each score. Any electronic materials can be sent to the same address using a free upload/download service such as WeTransfer (https://www.wetransfer.com), Pando (http://www.pando.com) or others.

Category B:

send an email to concorso (at) sincronie.org indicating the SoundCloud link (http://www.soundcloud.com) where the track has been uploaded and the title of the work.

If you are not already registered on SoundCloud, you can do so for free and without commitment.

6 - Wait for the email with information regarding the selection outcome and details of the awards.

4. EXCLUSION AND INCOMPATIBILITY

Those who do not send the materials to be selected by the indicated deadline are excluded from the competition.

Furthermore, the following cannot participate in the competition:

• members of the jury;

• members of the Sincronie board of directors.

Until July 30, 2013, it will be possible to send inquiries regarding the call exclusively via email to the address concorso (at) sincronie.org.

5. RESULTS AND PRIZES

The jury will select up to four rearrangements, two for Category A and two for Category B, which will be performed during a Sincronie event within the Gesualdo Festival 2013, in the autumn of 2013 in Milan.

After the live performance, the jury will award the following prizes:

Category A:

first prize: 1300 euro;

second prize: 500 euro.

Category B:

first prize: 800 euro;

second prize: 400 euro.

The performance of the tracks will be recorded.

6. SELECTION COMMITTEE

The projects will be selected by an international jury, whose decisions will be final and binding.

The jury is composed as follows:

for categories A and B:

7. DEADLINE

The deadline for sending the materials to be examined (scores, electronic materials, tracks) in the methods listed in point 3 of this call is set for 12:00 PM on September 15, 2013.

8. COPYRIGHT, OWNERSHIP AND PRIVACY

By sending the first email declaring the intention to participate in the competition, the contestant undertakes not to use the materials of the piece "Nell'alto dei giorni immobili" by Fausto Romitelli for purposes other than participation in the competition.

The contestant must also possess the copyright to the materials added relative to the Romitelli piece provided by the Organization, assuming all responsibility regarding any copyright violations belonging to third parties and undertaking to hold the Organizing Body harmless from legal defense costs. By accepting the terms of the competition, the contestant declares that they accept all rules and notes"}

It is stated in the call for entries that the participant grants the Organization authorization to publish, in any format and medium, the submitted pieces for the purposes of awarding, promotion, and dissemination of Sincronie's activities.

The participant also declares that they have no claim to compensation for the use of the pieces by the Organization for the aforementioned purposes.

Personal data provided by participants, which is mandatory for the purposes related to the competition, will be processed in accordance with the provisions of Italian Legislative Decree 196/2003, and will be communicated to third parties only for reasons inherent to the competition itself.

The Data Controller for personal data and documentation remains: Associazione Culturale Sincronie, Via Pola, 19 Milano.

9. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION / RULES AND ACCEPTANCE OF THE CALL

The Organization reserves the right to cancel or suspend the competition for any reason, including causes beyond its control.

The Organization assumes no responsibility for any technical, IT, or natural problems or setbacks that prevent the uploading, receipt, and evaluation of contestants' projects.

The Organization reserves the right to modify the contents of this call at any time, with appropriate communication on the official Sincronie website (www.sincronie.org).

By participating in the competition, the authors of the works declare that they accept all points of the call.
