The Australian ruling on illegal downloading
The Australian Federal Court has decided that six internet service providers (ISPs, i.e., companies that provide internet connections) must provide to the rights holders of the film Dallas Buyers Club – the 2013 film starring Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto which won 3 Oscars – the names and addresses of almost five thousand people who have downloaded it illegally in recent months. To be precise, providers must provide the names and addresses associated with 4,726 IP addresses (the numerical codes that identify a device every time it connects to an internet network) of those who downloaded and shared the file containing the film on BitTorrent, a famous file-sharing program.
