I must instead acknowledge that this second Liszt Concerto (Khatia Buniatishvili, Verbier Festival Orchestra, Charles Dutoit) does not raise any particular doubt or question. Not because it is inherently less beautiful or less audacious than Beethoven's op. 106 – on the contrary! Perhaps it is because here I do not find that disconcerting lack of correspondence between what the music seems to want to say (like taking a breath before uttering the first word) and what we instead see/hear. Here, everything is direct, everything is simple: and I think it can be like that too. Moreover, I was not familiar with this second Concerto – so I must repeat the clichés about Liszt, because ultimately he is truly visionary, surprising (and here it is truly spectral music, in the sense of Grisey).
