I hope to find a convincing answer, I have always wondered what the differences in "philosophy" are in the management of harmonic material.
If anyone would like to help me...
Thanks in advance

I am the least suitable person to answer because the question assumes that whoever answers has a dual preparation; I prefer to eventually add something once the facts are (almost) settled ๐

So, from what I have been able to see:
- Classical musicians reason in steps by referring them to the "current" key, whereas jazz musicians reason with symbols, "not caring" about the key or rather, a chord already describes everything regardless of its tonal placement.
- In C major, II7 for classical musicians is a triad built on the second degree (so, D), whereas a jazz musician would reason with D7; therefore, the letter gives the root and the other small numbers indicate its development. You can find things like D7#9#11 etc.
Thinking of a parallelism with figured bass (BC), it is certainly more immediate during improvisation and in my opinion, its indication should be as close to what is necessary as possible.
If you compare the BC indicated by Corelli and Bach, you will notice that Bach is an incredible perfectionist and by detailing to the maximum, difficulties sometimes arise
Jazz is fundamentally a tonal language, or at least I would treat this area as a first step (forgetting about modal Jazz, free jazz, etc.), and it seems useful to know a bit of functional analysis... which is also useful in a classical environment ๐
This is an immediate thought from a new Jazzophile ๐

Thanks Frank, I suspected as much.
The problem is that I get lost with all those acronyms, I don't understand the connection and reasoning like a classical player with Jazz notation... it drives me crazy.
Let's hope we understand more thanks to Bit's topic.
A moment will come when I'll be able to pick on Geppino ๐
