Strange topic, but I was reflecting on what the position of conservatory director used to be and what it has become today.
It is my understanding that in the past, at least for the major centers, it was a position of great prestige and had often seen great figures (and even great composers) take on this role.
Today, thinking about the largest European cities, do you think that among the various directors there is anyone who will influence or shape the course of music history? Are there great men among them (thinking also of Italy?) .. or has it now become a position for managers too busy making the numbers work?
