Good morning everyone, this is my first time writing, compliments on the site.

I have a problem with my upright piano, a Steinberg Farfisa that I purchased last year; probably due to moving it to a different location, after some time some keys stopped playing (they seemed to go slack without weight). Thanks to your lessons, I managed to understand that, in these keys, the escapement lever, after pushing the capstan and consequently the hammer, was unable to return to its resting position under the capstan, but instead rested on the front part of the capstan, and consequently when the key was pressed again, it rose without resistance.

Very cautiously and thinking three times before every operation, I managed to extract the entire "mechanical action frame" from the piano and I disassembled the mechanism of one faulty key, beastly!

Having the mechanism in hand, I noticed that the problem lies exactly in the pivot of the escapement lever which has become slightly stiff (at first I thought it was the spring, but no); in fact, as I read here on the forum, the escapement lever without a spring should move freely even just under its own weight, but instead it moved with difficulty, so I "delicately forced it" a little until it started moving freely again—a somewhat unprofessional solution... I imagine, but when I reassembled it, it worked correctly.

I read here that you should never lubricate the pivots and I didn't do it; how can I therefore definitively resolve this problem over time, which was caused, I imagine, by some humidity?

Hello,

Unfortunately, changes in temperature and humidity are absorbed by the wood (the piano is composed mainly of wood), a hygroscopic material.

This generates an increase in the friction coefficients within the action, with the consequence that the repetition lever pins no longer move freely.

To remedy the problem, a Technician is needed to restore the correct coefficients.

I agree with James. Let's hope this isn't the beginning of a process of increasing friction. A good Technician will know how to check the entire efficiency of the mechanics, to determine to what extent the increase in friction compromises its smooth movement. Some advise partially extracting the stuck pin and heating it. I am personally against this because heat, besides slightly stretching the gasket cloth of the hole, tends to expand the wooden part where the pin should instead remain firmly fixed. I would also like to know my friend James's opinion.

I agree with you.

You could, I say could, lubricate the pin with Protek, but if the problem is the gasket, things will get worse after a while.

I am against it.

I believe the best solution is, first of all, to get a hygrometer to check/resolve any incorrect climate values.

Then remove the pin and if there is sufficient gasket, ream it or make a new one.

Finally, the new pin.
