Hi guys, I find myself having to export the instrument tracks of a project created in Logic X. These tracks will then be loaded into Pro Tools for mixing. Now, I have several doubts regarding this; the first is: how do I adjust the track faders? I noticed that if I set all channels to unity (0.0 dB), the master project goes into the red.
Logic has a very convenient function, namely: Export > All Tracks as Audio File, but I don't know at what level to set the individual tracks. So, considering that the mixing will be done in PT, what can I do?
You must do a Rough Mix. That is, an approximate mix. Without effects on the channel strips (eq, rev, comp, etc.—nothing at all). I prefer to export tracks in mono and work within the stereo field inside Pro Tools (It is the standard procedure in recording studios when they send stems for mixing). Obviously, instruments that require stereo recording techniques must be exported in stereo (Piano, Harp, etc.).
Don't worry if the sum exceeds fullscale and goes into distortion. The important thing is that the individual tracks do not! You will deal with the summation aspect later during the mixing phase.
Once you have exported everything, import the stems you obtained into Pro Tools.
You begin by cutting out silences and creating audio regions in the session for each track.
Subsequently, you adjust the pan pots to recreate the spatiality of the instruments and then proceed with the mix.
Clearly, I cannot explain here how to carry out the mix. It must be evaluated case by case, and direct contact is needed to provide suggestions.
Once the mix is finished, export the track and move on to the mastering phase. You will therefore take care to create a new mastering session and work with the various commercial mastering suites available.
So, if I understood correctly, I create an approximate mix by making sure that the individual tracks do not saturate.
To do this, I rightly act by lowering the fader of each channel in case the track exceeds the threshold and goes into distortion...
I didn't quite understand if the command Export > All Tracks as Audio File calculates mono and stereo tracks during export, or if I have to do separate exports for the mono tracks.
I did an export test and noticed that by using the "all tracks as audio files" command, all tracks are stereo,
but the bass, for example, is a stereo file that sounds mono and I don't understand why the file is stereo (I used Kontakt and a bass library from Native Instruments)
Because evidently by default it exports everything in stereo. Clearly if the two channels are identical everything is in the center and therefore it is mono. It seems you will have to do it manually.
