Finale: changing the name of a part during the piece?

Good morning everyone, I am writing a piece with Finale 2009 in which some performers must change instruments during the piece: a flautist must switch to the piccolo, two others from C flute to G flute and bass flute, a B-flat clarinet must take up the bass clarinet, etc., and then they return to their previous instruments.

Is there a way in Finale to change the part name in the score during the piece, from one certain measure to another, and return to the previous name as can be done with a clef or rhythmic subdivision? I haven't found it. I can indeed modify the part name and the abbreviated name, but it does so for the entire piece; I cannot limit the modification to a certain number of measures and that's it.

Am I asking too much if this thing, assuming it is feasible, could also have MIDI effectiveness—that is, if at the moment I change a part from flute to bass flute, when I listen it transposes the sound an octave lower, or a fifth lower in the case of the G flute, and so on?

Thanks as always to those who have so kindly answered my previous questions.

The thing is easily doable starting from Finale 2012 (see image).

For 2009, I believe one must use 2 separate staves and gradually hide what is not being used.

a flautist must switch to the piccolo, two others from flute in C to flute in G and bass flute, a B-flat clarinet must take the bass clarinet, etc., then they return to their previous instruments.

As is regularly done with percussion, on average one staff is created for each instrumentalist to note the instrument changes.

Is there a way in Finale to change the part name in the score during the piece, from one measure to another, and return to the previous name as one might do with a clef or rhythmic subdivision? I haven't found it. I can indeed modify the part name and the short name, but it does so for the entire piece; I cannot limit the modification to a certain number of measures and that's it.

You can create multiple staves, and then hide the empty ones by playing with the number of measures per staff.

Can this also have MIDI effectiveness, meaning if at the moment I change a part from flute to bass flute, when I listen it transposes me an octave lower in sound, or a fifth lower in the case of the flute in G and so on?

You can remove the transposition; if the need is not to print a readable full score, you can create a second "service" score for playback, using as many staves as you want and playing with the timbres. At this point, the goal is the mp3 and not readability... so the constraint of one staff per instrumentalist is waived.

Thanks guys, I'll try it this way, that is by using two staves for a single performer where needed. I have never used the hide function, I hope to get through it well and manage to do it especially by delimiting the measure segments that interest me. However, I have a doubt regarding when I will have to print the separate parts. For instrumentalists who use two different instruments, I imagine I'll have to give them two parts, because I don't think the automatic system that creates parts can integrate two into one. (and then I'll try to get my hands on Finale 2012 :-))) )

I'll jump in quickly

No, just one staff with the instrument changes written on it. It is used all the time in orchestras. Consider that the flautist has only one mouth, so only one instrument can be played at a time. You also need it to understand if you physically give them enough time to make the change.

... then again, you can also use multiple staves. But a single staff is very commonly used for flute and piccolo

Once the score is completed, go to Page Layout, then Optimize Staff System so as to delete unwritten staves from individual pages. However, in Finale 2012 this system has completely changed; it is done via "Score Manager"."

Thanks Eagle, indeed I wasn't that clear; I know that I must give an instrumentalist only one part with indications of when to change instruments. I was referring to the fact that if with Finale, while writing the score, I have the flute and then the piccolo, and then the flute again for a single and same performer, I have to use the trick of writing two different staves side by side, one for flute and one for piccolo, and alternately hiding the one they are not using. However, when I ask Finale to create the respective parts for all of them, it will create a flute part and a piccolo part, whereas I would need the two to merge into a single one precisely because they are intended for one person who alternates between the two instruments.

So far, so good

Sorry, but that is only mandatory if you need to hear a different timbre; otherwise, one staff is enough... and if I'm not mistaken, from 2010 onwards, you can even change timbre within the same staff.

Indeed, you say

Exactly; write one line and you'll notice on the single staff for the flautist: Flute.....piccolo....flute...flute in G...piccolo...etc.

I remembered, good Geppino wrote:

"In Finale you can use different registrations on the same staff; the GPO4 does not have keyswitches, so you must load the various registrations on different MIDI channels and use an expression created ad hoc that has the effect of changing the MIDI channel in playback, so on the same staff you can call up different instruments, loaded on different MIDI channels. I did this back then when the ripieno entered during the fugue's tight passages, and I also did this for a Frank fugue, which had 4-5 different registrations; there is no need for a staff for every instrument."

We were talking about the organ, but the substance doesn't change much

Thanks Tiger, in fact I am leaning towards not caring about the MIDI consequences (even if I were to resolve it by changing the timbre, instruments that transpose would still play them for me at the wrong pitches) and to avoid adding more staves to hide alternately, but at this point I am left with the problem of changing at least the abbreviated name next to the staves where the instruments change during the piece, because as I said in my initial question I have a great fear that Finale 2009, precisely because it does not provide the function to replace the instrument in the middle of a piece, coherently does not even give me the possibility to change its name in the score for a limited number of measures. I can't tell it "now call this part Flute, Alto Flute, from measure 12 to measure 28 and then rename it Flute until the end," for example. If I change the name of the part, it changes it from the beginning to the end. And you will tell me "but just get this blessed Finale 2012 so we can resolve this!!" :-)
