Fifth fundamental volume — as fundamental as the previous four — of the recording series that Vanni Moretto's Atalanta Fugiens ensemble dedicates to the rediscovery of the Symphony of the Milanese "school" of the late 18th century. The symphonies of Francesco Zappa (an artist unpredictably rediscovered in the eighties by none other than the almost namesake Frank Zappa) start from and yet distinguish themselves from the post-Vivaldian symphonism within the circle of Sammartini, often approaching the Central European classical language (a stylistic shift perhaps also due to the composer's numerous travels across the Alps as a cellist). The orchestral pages of this collection, exceptionally bright (all in major keys, in fact), are splendidly rendered by the sparkling sound of the magnificent orchestra performing them.
