I am reporting the availability of the following Work:

FUNCTIONAL HARMONY

- Tonal

- Modal

- Modal/chromatic

- Chromatic

The undersigned, Giuseppe Perna, is its author.

Available upon request from the author: gppinoperna04@gmail.com

Giuseppe Perna, a composer and musician from Foggia, is a pianist, writer, and theorist deeply immersed in musical modality and its related harmonizations. Already the author of other essays on modal harmony, in this new and definitive book on the subject, Perna demonstrates how much freedom and novelty can be derived from an in-depth study of a topic developed in a modern way, which establishes its own virtues thanks to direct field experience: a precious series of practical tips aimed not only at improvisational practice, but also useful for a correct "thinking" approach to the subject, which is truly neglected today because erroneously considered to have no further possible developments. With "Functional Harmony," Perna dispels many preconceptions; he writes with proverbial clarity that can well be understood even by non-professionals and illustrates his thoughts with illustrative staves, providing cognitive insights that are rarely found within the scope of the scarce musical literature in question, at least that currently available in Italy. Thus, a unique book that demonstrates attachment to his musical vision (listening to which is recommended for better understanding), which runs in grooves that refuse labels or similarities, and which seeks to demonstrate how direct and emotional discoveries on the instrument can be an essential basis for the mature evolution of any musician.

Editorial Note

Giuseppe Perna plays exclusively by improvising and has developed a very personal style. His compositions have a meditative character with a vague oriental flavor due to the frequent use of chromatized Modes according to a personal technique and often in the absence of a well-defined melodic structure. Technically, we can speak of a modal-chromatic style in which, as he says, - improvisation is freedom, freedom from the rules of an exacting and severe pedagogy, a risky path not for the artist but to reach that audience that does not want to think about that inner music which is often vulnerability, fragility, weakness, canons detached from the society of happiness = oppression in which we live -

Author's Note

I believe it is a deficiency that many authors have forgotten that listening is of vital importance in the learning process. I intend to evoke a return to such practice. From a didactic point of view, listening and analyzing what one hears, when compared with the study of the text, produces results far superior to the two methods taken separately. It is possible to listen to compositions created and performed by the Author in "solo piano" by downloading the albums from various online stores such as "www.apple.com"

It is possible to listen to some of the Author's compositions in solo piano performance at the following link:

I thank those who are enjoying this Work which, in my view, could change the perspectives of many musicians oriented towards composition and improvisation.

Indeed, it is a text intended for the musician who wishes to deepen their knowledge of Harmony, particularly modal harmony, and for the musician who feels they have content but cannot express it in terms of composition and improvisation.

To compose or improvise, one must have very clear ideas from the standpoint of knowledge of Harmony; creating this knowledge is the main objective I set for myself in creating this Work.

In my view, the most important aspect of my Work is that theoretical study is not an end in itself but is accompanied by listening to my pieces, which contain the concepts expressed in the text.

Tonal harmony is not treated as such, but rather for the possibilities that modal Harmony possesses to intervene in tonal pieces, thus avoiding the repetitiveness of many predictable harmonic solutions (modalization or verticalization of tonal composition).

Finally, the natural evolution from diatonic modal Harmony towards modal/chromatic Harmony, and last but not least, towards intervallic Harmony, in which one goes beyond the diatonic scalar concept of composition and beyond the tertian concept of chords.

I am always available, for those who will receive the book, for didactic clarifications, practical lessons, meetings.....

Aside from appreciating Modale's initiative, I haven't understood which the publisher is ... the shop where I supply myself lacks information on such a text.

Hi Bit, the Publishing House does not exist because the contractual conditions proposed to me by various publishers were unacceptable as they were only looking out for their own interests... theirs. For the moment, I do not intend to waste my Work in improper hands; we will see in the future.

The text is currently available by contacting the author at:

Modal Curiosity, since I also find myself in the same situation as you... (disagreement with the unacceptable pre-printed clauses in publishing house contracts), how did you handle the issue of authorship in relation to any potential "tributes" to be paid to the SIAE in charge?

Thank you in advance

Hi Rotore, regarding copyright and therefore the authorship of the Work, I have sent myself a registered letter containing the text which, obviously, I will only open if necessary; furthermore, I donated the Work to the Foggia Conservatory, obtaining a receipt with date, signature, and stamp.

Thanks Modale for the response, moving forward personally I only have the "fiscal" part left to clear regarding the proceeds from the sale of books ... actually I should also prepare myself to print...
