Premised that it will most likely be a mental obsession

Very often one hears talk of the Italian Sixth chord or bel canto, always thinking of Italy but always referring to historical periods where Italy actually did not exist.

At this point Vivaldi would be Venetian or at best Veneto and not Italian, or rather ... how does this thing work? Are we talking about then with today's geography?

And in the 1700s, how did they speak, was that sixth still defined as Italian? If so... why?
