GLI SPAZI DELLA MUSICA – CALL FOR PAPERS 2013: "Sound bodies: spaces, identities, relations"

"Gli spazi della musica" is a semi-annual online journal published by the Department of Humanities (StudiUm) of the University of Turin.

The main areas of reference are musicology, comparative studies, musical dramaturgy, performance studies, and gender studies.

"Gli spazi della musica" includes two types of interventions: the Ricercari, on free topics, broad contributions dedicated to fundamental research subjects; the Variazioni, developed from a general theme proposed from time to time by the editorial board, are intended to expand knowledge on specific topics.

The journal invites submissions for the next issue to be included in both parts of the first section: the Ricercari with free themes and the Variazioni on a theme.

The theme chosen for the Variazioni of the two issues scheduled for 2013 is "Sound bodies: spaces, identities, relations".

The questions related to this theme can be traced back to four main areas:

1. Representations, images, and musical constructions of bodies.

2. Bodies that make music, bodies that listen.

3. Bodies, instruments, sound bodies.

4. Bodies, music, space.

Deadlines for submitting essays:

January 31, 2013, for the first issue;

June 30, 2013, for the second issue.

Essays, conforming to the editorial guidelines available on the website and accompanied by a 600-character summary, must be sent to glispazidellamusica.lettereefilosofia AT unito.it.

Contributions are accepted in Italian, English, French, German, and Spanish.

I wanted to deal with the dramaturgical consequences in late 1900s musical theater of the defunctionalization of the libretto text, with specific references to Meredith Monk, Georges Aperghis and Salvatore Sciarrino. Practically speaking, understanding what theatrical and musical forms emerge when operatic singing has no libretto, has no text, or the linguistic value of the text is drastically reduced.

I understand, do you know Ruwet? I know he focuses on structuralism and I've read something... but since we are on the subject... what would you integrate regarding the discussion on text?

I know Ruwet, it's a classic of musical aesthetics. But I would have set everything up analytically. I take the scores, study them, and only then try to understand how to develop an aesthetic discourse. In any case, I had identified three main "panoramas." For Monk, musical narratology in the style of Carolyn Abbate (I don't know if you know her, she's a crazy American). For Sciarrino, music ecology in the style of Clarke (I dealt with this in my specialist thesis; it's interesting, it stems from ecological psychology). For Aperghis, French post-structuralism (Deleuze and Guattari, whom I would have studied just for the occasion, since "A Thousand Plateaus" is now a milestone).
