In many grand pianos, during the mechanical inspection, I notice that the hammers REST on the rest rail, whereas they should be raised by a few millimeters.
Why this unusual position?
In order to restore the correct distance, is it necessary to adjust the pilots or is there a system to lift the entire hammer rail?
certainly. In a grand piano, the hammers must not rest on the repetition lever (or on the repetition pads if it is a Yamaha or Steinway). This is because, since the grand piano action works by gravity, maximum adherence of the repetition lever to the roller is required. If this were not the case, the let-off weight would be altered and the repetition weight would also be falsified. The manufacturer establishes the weights and dynamics, and from the design of the key-bridge-hammer geometry, a "responsiveness" of the action under the pianist's fingers is achieved. The hammer rest bar must be about 3-4 mm from the stiletto, so as to cushion the fortissimo stroke without this completely engaging the roller, which would otherwise flatten in a short time
