I should preface that I am not a technician, but I am fascinated by the mechanisms of my piano (a 1956 Steinbach with cross-stringing and Renner action) and so I decided to take matters into my own hands, aware of the risk of irreversibly damaging the action.
After eliminating all friction and aligning the parts, I have reached the point where I must regulate the escapement.
Even though I have ensured that with the hammer in check, the highest part of the escapement is about 1mm from the cap (noce), it happens that when pressing the key halfway through its travel and then continuing to the bottom, I get a double sound. In effect, the hammer bounces on the escapement and strikes again. If I then depress the key all the way to the end, obviously the escapement moves away from under the cap and therefore the repetition lever (paramartello) can come into action.
I should mention that I do not know where to find the manufacturer's specifications, so I have set at my own discretion the hammer-to-string distance at 44.5mm, the let-off at 3mm, and the key dip at 11mm (I placed a small shim under the lever; it was 10.5mm).
Can anyone help me understand what adjustment I need to make, or where to find the manufacturer's specifications?
Could increasing the let-off or decreasing the hammer-to-string distance by adjusting the repetition spring bar be a solution?
Could it also be that the springs that return the hammers to rest are weak?
Or have I made the friction on the hammer flange too low? I read somewhere that the hammer flange should go down under the weight of its screw, but this does not always happen. Sometimes the flange goes down even without the weight of the screw.
