I am opening this thread because I wanted to share a study method that I am adopting during this period while studying Piano.
Reading various books, such as those by Sandor and Chang, I noticed that my study method relied heavily on muscle memory due to my very superficial sight-reading; I know the notes in bass and treble clef, but my solfeggio is very unrefined, so I am trying to remedy this by studying compositions note by note—that is, also at a harmonic level—trying to understand what I am playing and why I am playing it. And I must say that I have noticed a slight improvement: when I play a chord or a note on the piano, it is no longer just pressing a key from memory like an elevator button... 🙂 Of course, it is very meticulous and patient work to take the sheet music and a pencil and sit down to analyze perhaps 5 or 6 or more pages, but if you love music there are no excuses, at least as I see it. 🙂
Obviously, I would like to know from the experts if I am using the right method and if there are other methods. 🙂
To start with as texts, I use Schoenberg's Manual of Harmony, which I read in its entirety understanding very little, Pedron, which I am currently studying, and La Modulazione by Mario Cicogna.
I started with the first 3 minuets from Bach's 19 easy pieces and Debussy's first arabesque.
So, I proceed like this:
1) Identify the key of the piece, whether minor or major, paying attention to the accidental notes
2) Mark all the notes that are not in the clef and analyze if they are passing tones, chromatic, etc...
3) Analyze only the bass clef: arpeggios, chords, etc... and identify what they are, i.e., minor, major seventh, diminished, etc...
4) Analyze cadences, always only in the bass clef
5) Analyze the treble clef and, excluding chords, see what relationship the melody has with the harmony—that is, whether a note or more notes in the treble clef have a relationship with a chord or arpeggio in the bass clef and what kind of relationship it is
6) Analyze if there are modulations, what type they are, and—which is quite arduous—the reason for that modulation at that specific point in the composition
