Too many times I hear people talking about harmonics and the importance of knowing them, perhaps not for all instrumentalists … I don't really know what they are!

What are they? How does one learn them? What are they used for? Are there specific texts or educational materials available online on the subject? Is it a matter of theory or practice?

The chapter on harmonic sounds is rich and interesting.

Every time a string vibrates, it produces harmonic sounds.

Harmonic sounds are sweeter and weaker sounds that accompany a fundamental sound.

The importance of harmonic sounds is enormous: they reinforce the main sound; they determine timbre; they are decisive in the construction of instruments.

The first to discover the existence and production of harmonic sounds was Father Marin Mersenne (1588-1648)

a vibrating string does not simply go up and down, but is the sum of infinite modes in which it vibrates.

the various ways to put it simply are the harmonics of the fundamental, i.e., other "notes". And depending on many factors, these harmonics/notes have different volumes, not only between different instruments like violins, trumpets, etc., but also between similar instruments—well, here it gets long and complex.

to put it even more simply, the harmonics determine the timbre of a sound

If you have ever used a Hammond, for example, the drawbars are used to add/remove harmonics...

Other modes from the fundamental are called harmonics if they are integer multiples of the fundamental itself. A good example of important non-harmonic modes can be found in the spectrum of bells.
