I think it has its pros only in particular contexts and there are many cons in many other contexts. It seems like a good choice if a child were very precocious. The standard rhythms of school could be too slow for him, whereas in an environment free from patterns he could give his best. In any case, he would probably miss out on the best things about socializing with other children, provided that there are parents who also take care of this aspect. I believe that, anyway, he would feel different doing something that the majority of people do not do. In any case, it seems to me more than anything a huge responsibility for the parents. I think it is something achievable and that brings concrete results only in truly exceptional cases.
