I am 24 years old, I entered the conservatory this year, and I must admit it is not disappointing; the teachers are very well-prepared and there are many practical subjects. I do not want to go on for too long, I would just like to ask if playing could be my daily bread. Unfortunately, I have never had any experience at a concert level. My only new experience is that in this university I am playing with some guys when we make music together. As a self-taught musician—because I am more self-taught than anything else—I wonder how I should proceed if I had the possibility to play this summer? A colleague and I thought about doing just piano and voice, 80s music. Can you guide me on which books to buy? Practically speaking, I would only need to accompany and I have no idea how to do it, given that I would have to stick to the original songs... rhythm, chords, etc.. if you want and feel like it, you can also tell me about your experiences. Look, in my opinion, you are in the right place at the right time. Entering a jazz conservatory at 24 is not late at all; in fact, those who come as self-taught musicians often already have a more developed ear and musical personality compared to those who have only followed an academic path. The fact that you are already playing in ensembles is extremely important, because true growth happens there. To work in the summer with piano and voice, you don't need to immediately become a technical monster: you need to learn how to accompany well, keep time, and support the singer without filling everything up. I advise you to work hard on listening to and transcribing original tracks. Start with simple 80s pieces, study harmonic progressions, dynamics, and basic voicing. And above all, play live as soon as you can, even in small settings: that is the real school.

For pop accompaniment, rather than specific books, I would suggest studying lead sheets to understand the chord structure.
As for improvisation, however, it is fundamental to rely on constant listening to great performers to acquire the right language.
