I am in a crisis; next year I turn 50 and I want to realize a dream of mine... having a piano.

I live in the countryside so I am not interested in a silent system, and I would also have a room available for the piano, but the problem is my wife.

For her, spending money on a piano is quite wasted... a nice holiday abroad would be much better....

Help me look for a good quality/price product.

I play every day as a self-taught musician; I have been playing for many years and let's just say I have reached a decent level.

I am interested solely and exclusively in classical music, like Chopin, Liszt, Bach, etc...

For 13 years I have owned a Morrison, paid 1500 euros second-hand, and I realize its limits... it sounds metallic, shallow, and redundant. I wanted to wait another year to get another one, but a string broke and on top of that, it needs tuning.

So, this morning I went to a very important piano center in Turin to replace the string, and while I was waiting, I tried various pianos; then I called the owner regarding the purchase of a piano, and we arrived at a purchase proposal for an ESSEX 116, telling me it is new (serial number 152409) for a total of 4900 euros, trading in mine with transport included.

What do you think?

How can I know, based on the serial number, if the piano is new??

I tried this piano and I immediately liked the sound... round and deep, but I am not a professional, so I evaluated it only with my heart.

I am afraid to buy it second-hand given my inexperience in this matter.

Welcome. I have already said many times that it is difficult to give advice from a distance! Try to hire a technician to examine it and clearly explain the reasons why you should or should not buy it. In any case, Essex is a decent piano. Unfortunately, I do not have the serial numbers.

Welcome. Your wife's prejudice is a bad one, with all due respect. Classical music is part of humanity's cultural heritage; it should be preserved and cultivated. Fortunately, my partner pushes me to play even when I am dead tired coming home from work.

I feel like saying:

once the holiday is over, you are left with nothing, except for some memories for a few years (and perhaps some photos tossed here and there on the hard disk or on some cloud).... a piano is forever.

I would say that the money donated to the tour operator is definitely wasted
