In my opinion those lyrics are just lyrics, it would be enough to peek at Grantham which is much more progressive and "elementary".

In my opinion one can avoid passing through classical harmony, or rather, the chords are automatically understood ... as Jazz Mania used to say, it's precisely the approach that changes, you get there via "other" roads

I believe that only the teaching approach is different.

If we are talking about traditional Jazz (bebop, hard bop....) the harmony is not so different from Bach's.

If we are talking about contemporary jazz, the harmony is very similar to that which we find in musicians like Persichetti, Debussy.

What changes is the stylistic approach, even if nowadays many musicians tend towards a stylistic fusion between traditional jazz and the classical style.
