Born in Erfurt, Johann Bernhard was a second cousin of Johann Sebastian Bach. He received his first rudiments of music from his father Johann Aegidius, and, in 1695, became an organist in Erfurt. Later, he held the same position in Magdeburg.
In 1703, he succeeded Johann Christoph Bach as organist in Eisenach and as court harpsichordist to John William of Saxe-Eisenach. Many of his compositions are lost, but four of his orchestral suites and some compositions for organ have survived until the 21st century. His son Johann Ernst was also a musician.
