I have been studying for many years on a Kawai GS40 grand piano; I have always complained about a certain heaviness of the action, difficulty in agility, etc..
At the time, I performed a "lightening" intervention on the key by placing self-adhesive weights (like those used by tire technicians) under the advantageous part of the lever, bringing the entire keyboard uniformly to about 50g (I was starting from 56-60); subsequently, I also performed an intervention to lubricate friction using graphite first and then Teflon; these interventions only partially solved the problem...
Recently, I felt the need to study for a period on a piano with a light and smooth action; I wanted to have this experience to understand, to make a comparison, and because I have always believed that the heaviness of the Kawai's action had somehow hindered me, limiting my ability to fully develop my technique... so I rented a Yamaha upright, chosen from many specifically for its lightweight mechanical play characteristics... Well gentlemen, after some time I decided to research the key weight of the Yamaha out of pure curiosity... well, to my great surprise, we are at about 56-58g in the central and high register and 60-62g in the low register!!!
I should point out that playing the Yamaha gives you the sensation of playing something like an accordion because the key "appears" so light...!!
I am quite overwhelmed... how is all this possible?
