Aside from good technical and theoretical preparation, I believe that the prerequisite for learning jazz phrasing and pronunciation is listening to the great soloists and practice.
Unfortunately, even though I teach this discipline myself, I must admit that there are things that cannot be taught or codified much beyond a certain point.
Consider that African-American music is largely born from an oral tradition...
