I believe that it is not physically possible; with this I do not mean that I don't believe you, but that there must be another explanation. Lightning is generated by the electrostatic charging of the atmosphere. The potential difference between the high potential of the clouds and the earth, once a certain limit is exceeded, "discharges to the ground." The air temperature near the lightning increases drastically (I don't remember if it even exceeds 10,000 degrees in a few hundredths of a second); this generates a sudden increase in pressure similar to what happens just before an explosion, with the difference being that in this case there is no container and thus the explosion is immediate, and that is precisely what generates the sound of thunder. The only possibility would be for the lightning to heat the immediately adjacent air over a very long period, but considering the resistivity of the air, the voltage is very high and this cannot happen; therefore, if you did not hear the sound of thunder, the lightning strikes were probably too far from your position to be heard because, I repeat, I believe it is physically impossible to have lightning without thunder being generated just a few moments later. Whether or not you perceive it depends, in my opinion, on the distance (spherical divergence law: as sound moves away from the source, it loses energy at a logarithmic rate, specifically decreasing by 6dB for every doubling of the distance from the source, assuming it is a point source). Seeing the lightning before hearing the sound simply derives from the fact that light travels at a speed of 300,000 km/sec and sound at about 300 m/s, so about a million times slower; therefore, the greater the distance of the source, the greater the time variation between the perception of the lightning and the sound.
