Listening to Mendelssohn's overture 'The Hebrides' . . .

It was more likely to think of Beethoven and the sea while listening to "Meerestille und Gluckliche Fahrt (Calm Sea and Happy Voyage) Opus 112 by Goethe.

For what my information on Beethoven's life is worth, I would say quite no. The only moment in which an encounter with the sea could have occurred was when, together with his mother, in 1783, he made a trip to Rotterdam to perform on the piano and where he met Carl Stamitz. Rotterdam is washed by the Nieuwe Maas river and, on that occasion, he took a ride on a barge enduring incredible cold. I don't know if the barge reached the sea, which is not far away,

After that, Beethoven never moved from Bonn except to go to Vienna once in 1787 and then definitively in 1791. From Vienna, his biggest move was towards Prague and others towards spa towns. Therefore... no sea!

As you know, Beethoven was more a man of the woods!

... and then definitely in 1792 (not in 1791, which is the year of Mozart's date).

Anyway, so many times, facing the sea at sunset, sitting on the shoreline, I have hummed to myself the last movement of the Pastoral.

The Pastoral is Nature, and it doesn't matter that trees, cuckoos, and skylarks inspired it. It is transversal to any landscape, and the final thanksgiving to the Divinity is a thanks to God for having conceived Creation.

I suspected it ... no sea.

And anyway Beethoven had no children to take to the sea, and it is known that sea air is good because it is said - it is said - that then children fall ill less in winter.

Acc!... you cited op. 112 which I miss very much in concert programs, just as much as you miss op. 124. For the latter, an orchestra is enough; for the former, which also lasts much less, a choir is also needed.... But when will someone get the bright idea to propose them together with the Ninth!?
