Managing timpani tuning during performance

Changing tuning is used during performances; there must be enough time for the change. Obviously, if the writing is dense, it can be risky.

With chromatic timpani, changing the tuning of the drum is a quick and error-proof operation. Twentieth-century scores provide for this continuously and the time required is extremely limited (on the order of a single movement, even, provided the tempo of the piece is not extremely high and if the timpanist does not have to do something else on another timpano in the meantime, logically). I am not a percussionist, I say this for the sake of accuracy, but I have studied timpani; therefore, unless a specialist can/wants to intervene and if you have a specific case to submit, please do so. If instead the question was of a general nature, I think I have answered it.
