(ASCA-AFP) - Berlin, May 18 - The German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, considered one of the greatest opera singers of the last century, died today at the age of almost 87. His wife, Julia Varady, announced it to the DPA news agency.
The singer, who had interrupted his career in 1992 to pursue activities as a conductor, will be remembered above all for his interpretations of Schubert's 'Winterreise'.
Aside from being sorry, I prefer performers like Fritz Wunderlich and Gerard Souzay for Schubert, whereas I see Fischer as more suitable for Schumann's lieder
