It was above all the fantastic element, in which the atmosphere of the ancient German forest lives again, rendered by the composer with a highly innovative orchestration, that made this opera national and romantic. An heir to Beethoven and the Enlightenment: optimistic and triumphant and thus, far from the twilight sense that would characterize Schumann and, naturally, above all Wagner.
Condemned by the clerical and reactionary censorship of Vienna, it is the great lesson of Beethoven passed down to posterity.
