News - Composition workshops: choose the piece

Starting from next year (2015), Pianoconcerto.it will provide the professional production of a piece chosen from those presented in each composition workshop. One of the many goals of this initiative is to create over time a collection of unpublished pieces to be broadcast on the web radio that Pianoconcerto.it is considering creating.

The nature of the workshops will change only slightly for now; they will be thematic, scheduled, and structured; the productions offered will be four per year and will not include the workshop dedicated to choral music. The areas will be as follows:

- Piece for piano (approximately February)
- Fugue (approximately April)
- Orchestration (approximately June)
- Choir (approximately September)

In the case of the piece for piano, recording from an acoustic instrument (*) is planned; for other ensembles, the production will be created using excellent libraries (in this case, it will not be possible to use effects). Mixing and mastering will take place in a recording studio with calibrated monitoring and environments.

To allow full creative freedom, one of the four productions will be the prize of an online competition; the call for entries will follow (approximately, deadline end of year).

The choice of the best (**) piece will be exclusive to forum members, with the caveat that workshop participants will have a very high voting weight compared to other users (voting regulations will follow).
Composers participating in the workshop will be required to vote, and the chosen piece must be sent via email (MIDI file and score) along with a pre-filled form containing their name and signature for publication and broadcast rights on Pianoconcerto.it's web radio.

(*) In the event that the recording studio is unavailable, alternatively, the production will be created using East West QL or Garritan libraries; recording processed with analog outboard gear.

(**) In effect, there will not be a competition jury (aside from the end-of-year initiative); every listener has the right to choose the piece that interests them most (for various reasons); therefore, it will be a "popular" jury composed of the composers who participated in the workshop and forum users interested in the initiative.

The same question has arrived—both privately and via Facebook—which I am reporting because I believe it may also concern other interested parties:

"can modern music, jazz, and others also be presented..."

As the previous editions of the workshops teach us, the stylistic scope has never been a constraint. On the contrary, as has emerged in practice, it has always been stimulating to listen to arrangements of different natures that stem from the same initial compositional material.

For the purposes of the prize, as already expressed in the presentation, in fact, it will always be the composers participating in the workshop and the community users who will evaluate, based on their own orientations (aesthetic, technical, taste, etc.), which piece they would like to hear realized.

I hope I have answered; anyway, thanks to the two friends for the question.

a truly excellent initiative.

I will not fail to participate, as always.

I can add that if someone has a friend/acquaintance who can record the piece live, I don't think there would be any problems having the performer also sign a release form. I await confirmation from those who know more than I do.
