I am receiving this communication from the Conservatory of Florence and I am passing it on to all possible interested parties, in case it might ever be useful to someone

AUDITIONS FOR THE ORCHESTRA OF THE TEATRO OLIMPICO DI VICENZA

The new artistic and educational project of the Orchestra del Teatro Olimpico (OTO) of Vicenza, founded in 1990, involves a complete renewal of the ensemble with Maestro Alexander Lonquich in the role of Principal Director.
Dalla Stagione 2014/15 the OTO will be an "under 30" chamber orchestra at the center of which is a project with a dual purpose: to offer a highly educational professional development path in orchestral practice, thanks to the presence of renowned conductors and principals, and at the same time to realize a series of high-quality artistic concerts โ€“ included in a subscription season โ€“ which will be held in the main hall of the Teatro Comunale di Vicenza.

A call for auditions has therefore been issued for the following orchestral roles:

-

nr. 25 strings

(7 first violins; 6 second violins; 5 violas; 4 cellos; 3 double basses)

-

nr. 14 winds

(2 flutes, one of which with piccolo requirement; 2 oboes, one of which with English horn requirement; 2 clarinets; 2 bassoons; 2 horns; 2 trumpets; 2 trombones)

-

the timpani/percussion role

will be assigned exclusively based on professional curriculum.

Graduates between the ages of 18 and 30 may apply for the auditions. Applications must arrive by

September 15, 2014

.

All details and registration forms are published on the Orchestra del Teatro Olimpico website at the address

how I wish I could have obtained my diploma from the conservatory...

a question from an ignorant person: those who do not have a conservatory diploma, but have a high school diploma and a university degree, can they at least try?

You should ask for information directly on the website, but normally when they talk about a diploma in this context, it refers to the degree obtained at a music conservatory.

In effect, with the equivalence of educational qualifications, somewhat "contradictory" scenarios open up...

If you are very far along in your studies to the point of being able to win an audition, having already obtained a degree, I would consider doing a review by enrolling in a two-year program. You could easily pass the entrance exam and, at most, they will give you quite a few credits to make up.

But it is not an impossible thing. Of course, if one were already at an excellent level. But the most incredible thing: in the artistic field, does a piece of paper guarantee anything? When has it ever been like that? I understand it is a way to reduce the queue, but exceptions should be provided for.

Historically, even pianists and organists have often done without studying at a conservatory, limiting themselves to private instruction. But for the purposes of forming a youth orchestra, there are things, such as general musical preparation, that are very difficult to evaluate... A diploma or a degree in performance disciplines is a kind of passepartout. And indeed, the average musical level of non-graduated opera singers is quite low...
